You might be thinking that salves are complicated to make. The name “Salve” sounds like it would be a bit complicated if you ask me. But, healing salves are one of the easiest DIY recipes you will ever make.
This calendula salve recipe is made with Lavender Essential Oil for extra benefits. It only contains a few ingredients including Apricot Oil and Sweet Almond Oil which come with their own unique healing benefits.
WHAT IS A SALVE?
When you think of a salve, think of an ointment similar to what you would get from your local pharmacy. Salves are made to have healing properties and offer lots of skincare benefits.
Salves can have anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties and can also be used to protect and soothe the skin when you have minor cuts, abrasions, irritation, and inflammation.
WHAT IS SALVE MADE FROM?
A salve is made from a combination of oils, and waxes. You can also customize any salve recipe and include herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and lemon balm, just to name a few. Botanicals such as Calendula, Lavender, and Chamomile leaves can also be used to make a salve.
Another great way to customize a salve is to make a congestion salve that might include ingredients like Peppermint Essential Oil, Eucalyptus Essential Oil, and menthol crystals.
BENEFITS OF CALENDULA
Calendula flowers offer a ton of skincare benefits. Not only are these little flowers pretty with a nice light smell but they are filled with antioxidants. More benefits of using calendula flowers include that calendula can soothe inflamed and irritated skin.
Using Calendula Flowers also helps to moisturize the skin and prevent premature aging of the skin. It’s also a very gentle botanical so if you have sensitive skin it should cause any skin irritation.

APRICOT KERNEL OIL
If you love a light and gentle oil, then apricot kernel oil is the perfect oil for you. It is used in this calendula salve recipe not only because it’s light and gentle on the skin but also because it has anti-inflammatory properties.
In addition to having anti-inflammatory properties apricot kernel oil also contains fatty acids such as vitamins A and E, which help to protect and heal the skin.

SWEET ALMOND OIL
When making this easy calendula salve recipe you want to use carrier oils that are not too heavy. The second oil used for this skincare recipe is sweet almond oil. It is known to reduce the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and wrinkles over time.
Sweet almond oil is also filled with fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants to help with skin rejuvenation. If you would like to substitute sweet almond oil, you can use avocado oil instead for this salve recipe.
CANDELILLA WAX
Wondering how to make salve without beeswax? You are in luck, there are other waxes you can use to make a skincare salve. One way is to use candelilla wax instead of beeswax. Beeswax can be found in many of the recipes on this site but sometimes switching it up is good.
Candelilla wax is a great alternative to beeswax, especially if you are looking for a vegan alternative. Candelilla Wax comes from the leaves of the candelilla plant.
If you are trying to decide between using candelilla wax vs beeswax in your homemade skincare recipes it’s important to note that you only need to use half the amount of candelilla wax compared to beeswax.
LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL
Using essential oils is one of the best ways to add healing benefits to your homemade skincare products. Lavender Essential Oil is a favorite because it has a light soothing and relaxing scent.
One of the main reasons why it’s included in this calendula salve recipe is because it may have antiseptic benefits, meaning it can possibly heal bug bites and minor cuts. When you spend lots of time outdoors like I do you are prone to get a bug bite or two.
Other benefits of using lavender essential oil in skincare are that it can help to soothe inflammation and it also has antifungal and antibacterial properties.
OTHER WAYS TO USE SALVE
Salves are not only great for healing skin issues. Another great way to use a slave is to make a salve recipe that includes ingredients that help with congestion.
You can do this by incorporating menthol, peppermint, tea tree oil, eucalyptus, and patchouli essential oil with different carrier oils and waxes. It would be like creating your very own vapor rub salve.
And, would certainly come in handy during cold season.
