WHAT IS A SUGAR SCRUB?
ALL ABOUT SUGAR SCRUBS
If you want to learn exactly what a sugar scrub is, I talk all about the difference between a sugar scrub and a body scrub in my WHIPPED BODY SCRUB RECIPE post. You should definitely check it out after you have read this post.
However, one of the main differences is the ingredients that are used to make a body scrub and a sugar scrub. For instance, in this DIY skincare recipe, sugar is the main exfoliant. Then to pump up the moisture level so the skin feels soft SHEA BUTTER is added.
But the words body scrub can be general. Basically, a body scrub can include other exfoliants, besides granulated sugar, like Jojoba Beads, fruit enzymes, or lactic acid, just to name a few.
EMULSIFIED BODY SCRUB
An emulsified body scrub is the best, if you haven’t tried making one this is your chance. It contains you guessed it an emulsifier. Emulsifiers make the body scrub easy to apply to the skin and keep certain ingredients from separating.
Yes, I know a 2 ingredient body scrub is quick and easy to make. But, an emulsified body scrub can be so luxurious, that it’s worth it to add in an emulsifier.
So, if you are looking for a thick creamy body scrub that will hold its texture then an emulsified body scrub is your best bet. And, this margarita lime sugar scrub is emulsified, how exciting!
SCENTED DIY BODY SUGAR SCRUB
Most sugar scrubs are scented, but you can certainly find some that are unscented. The beauty of making your own scrub is that you can be creative and learn how to customize sugar scrubs to your liking. Meaning that you can use different butter, oils, scents, and even different colorants.
For this exfoliating margarita lime sugar scrub, I customized it using a favorite scent and skin-loving butter and oils. But, you can also use essential oils to add a touch of aromatherapy to your life. Plus, blending essential oils can be a fun creative outlet.

TOOL USED TO MAKE MARGARITA LIME SUGAR SCRUB
Tools you’ll need for this body scrub recipe
Here are some of the things you will need to make this Margarita Lime Sugar Scrub.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE MAIN INGREDIENTS
NATURAL INGREDIENTS THAT MAKE THIS DIY BODY SUGAR SCRUB SHINE
APRICOT KERNAL OIL
Apricot Kernel Oil is a very lightweight oil that has excellent skincare benefits. It is extracted from the seeds of the apricot. This natural oil is high in fatty acids such as oleic acid and linoleic acid which are very hydrating to the skin.
Additionally, this oil is lightweight, contains vitamins A and E, improves skin and elasticity, and soothes inflamed and irritated skin.
COCONUT OIL
It’s no secret that coconut oil is a popular natural oil to use in both store-bought and DIY skincare. It’s also a popular cooking essential. Meaning, it’s easily accessible from the grocery store and that you probably already have it in your kitchen pantry. However, if you don’t have it you can GET IT HERE.
Like most natural oils coconut oil contains fatty acids that help lock moisture into the skin. Basically, it will leave your skin nourished and moisturized. Also, it’s filled with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. If you have oily or acne prone skin coconut oil might not be the natural oil to use on your skin.
However, since this is an exfoliating body scrub meaning its contents will be washed off the skin. Using it probably won’t be an issue, if you are worried about your pores getting clogged you can substitute the coconut for JOJOBA OIL or ARGAN OIL.
SHEA BUTTER
I like to call shea butter, a magic potion. It can be used alone on the skin to give a vibrant glow, and soothe and heal irritated skin. Honestly, it just feels like heaven when you apply it. You can find other DIY skincare recipes here on this site where shea butter is used as the main ingredient.
Such recipes include the Shea Butter Hair Moisturizer Recipe as well as the DIY clove oil hair conditioner recipe. Both recipes are so nourishing for the hair. And, as you can see shea butter can be used in both skincare and haircare DIYs. Because of its moisturizing benefits, it makes an excellent ingredient in this body sugar scrub recipe.
THIS IS AN EMULSIFIED BODY SCRUB
INGREDIENTS FOR EMULSIFIED DIY BODY SUGAR SCRUB
STEARIC ACID
This margarita lime sugar scrub is luxurious and creamy. That’s because it’s an emulsified body scrub recipe. Stearic Acid is a fatty acid that is derived from both plants and animals. It helps to thicken and stabilize this sugar scrub.
Also, moisturizing the skin in addition to exfoliation is one of the goals of this body scrub. And, steric acid is great for helping to moisturize the skin. Additionally, it makes the sugar scrub feel luxurious.

EMULSIFYING WAX NF
Emulsifying Wax NF is used as a co-emulsifier in this sugar scrub recipe to further enhance the stability of the scrub. It is a combination of cetostearyl alcohol and polysorbate 60.
Combined stearic acid and Emulsifying Wax NF allow for our margarita body scrub to spread onto the skin more easily than a sugar scrub without emulsifiers.
