This post is about making an orange grapefruit emulsified body butter cream.

There is something about body butter that so many people love. Perhaps, it could be the name Body Butter. It sounds like something you can really luxuriate in. Like something Gods and Goddesses used to make themselves look royal and glow as they sat on their thrones.

If you are ready to treat yourself like royalty then I highly suggest that you make yourself a batch of body butter. Now, if you have made body butter before and the final result didn’t offer the royal feeling that you were expecting, I recommend trying to make an emulsified body butter cream.

Emulsified Body Butter Cream

An emulsified body butter cream is moisturizing to the skin just like a regular body butter but it offers the added benefits of being lighter to the touch, less greasy, and offering the skin maximum hydration.

EMULSIFIERS

An emulsifier helps to mix and stabilize two or more ingredients that otherwise would not mix on their own, like oil and water. Basically, if you try adding water to a body butter without an emulsifier in hopes of creating a cream or lotion, the two ingredients wouldn’t mix.

EMULSIFIED BODY BUTTER CREAM

To put it simply an emulsified body butter is a body butter that has emulsifiers added to it. These emulsifiers make body butter more pliable to the skin. This allows the body butter to glide onto the skin and absorb more easily.

Emulsifiers make body butter feel like a cream rather than a hard butter. Adding an emulsifier to a body butter also allows you to incorporate more ingredients together like oil, water, and water-based hydrosols as well as other ingredients.

BODY BUTTER vs EMULSIFIED BODY BUTTER

The difference between emulsified body butter cream & regular body butter

If you are wondering if there is a difference between body butter and emulsified body butter the answer is yes. So, let’s keep this in the context of DIY body butter, which can be described as one or multiple kinds of natural butter, combined sometimes with other natural oils and perhaps an antioxidant to make a body moisturizer.

Best Body Butter

The main difference between making body butter and making an emulsified body butter cream is that with a body butter cream, you are adding in and combining additional ingredients such as water and oil that will make your final product feel and look different.

The body butter that is best for dry skin

If you have dry skin and you want to add hydration, adding a body butter that contains water is the clear winner. Basically, that means an emulsified body butter is better. In addition to adding maximum hydrating, an emulsified body butter cream also makes your body butter feel like something store-bought.

KOKUM BUTTER

All about kokum butter and why you should use it in your body butter cream

Kokum butter comes from the Kokum Tree, aka the Garcinia indica tree which is native to India. This butter is obtained by extracting the oil from the seeds and it goes through a little refining process. By the time it gets to the consumer, it has been refined a bit and its color is off-white and it doesn’t really have a smell.

Butter for Skin Benefits

Additionally, kokum butter is an excellent butter to use in a body butter cream because it has a firm texture and a high melting point. It is rich in the fatty acids stearic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid all of which help to soften and hydrate the skin.

AVOCADO OIL

What is avocado oil and why use it in a body butter cream?

This delicious creamy body butter cream that I’m going to show you how to make deserves some rich skin-loving avocado oil. Vitamins found in avocado oil include vitamins A, C, and E. They help protect the skin from environmental damage. Additionally, it’s also rich in fatty acids such as oleic acid which help keep the skin smooth and supple.

If you have dry skin avocado oil is an excellent choice. Using it as a remedy for dry skin is one of the main reasons it’s used in this particular body butter cream formula. Avocado oil is an amazing oil you do not want to get caught without when making your at-home skincare, especially if you have dry skin like I do that needs year-round moisturization.

GLYCERIN

Glycerin is a humectant. Humectants attract moisture to the skin. If you are wanting to create a skincare product that combats dry skin glycerin is an excellent ingredient to add.

Vegetable Glycerine is a clear, odorless compound this is derived from vegetables. It can also come from animal fat but I prefer to use vegetable-based glycerine. It’s also known as glycerol or glycerine.

When adding glycerin to DIY skin and hair products be careful not to add too much as it can sometimes cause the final product to become sticky, otherwise, it’s a great addition to DIY skincare and haircare products.

BENEFITS OF USING AN EMULSIFIER IN A BODY BUTTER CREAM

  • An emulsified body butter cream is hydrating due to the water content added to it
  • Emulsifiers make it easy for a body butter cream to absorb into the skin
  • Adding an emulsifier makes it easy to add additional skin-loving additives to your body butter
  • The shelf life and stability of body butter can be extended when using an emulsifier
  • It can make your body butter feel very luxurious and high end

DIY BODY BUTTER CREAM STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Oil Phase

1: Gather all of your ingredients and tools needed to create this body butter cream, from the lists above

2: Measure out my 81 grams of kokum butter, 57 grams of avocado oil, and 14 grams of glyceryl stearate using a digital scale.

3: Now, combine the kokum butter avocado oil and the glyceryl stearate in a heat-safe bowl or heat-safe beaker and set aside for now.

Water Phase

4: On a digital scale measure 60 grams of distilled water and 9 grams of glycerin and combine the two ingredients into a heat-safe bowl or heat-safe beaker. The mixture may turn cloudy, that’s normal just stir it vigorously until the mixture become clear again.

5: Prepare a water bath using a double boiler over a low heat source (the stove or an electric hot plate)

6: Place the container with the mixture from the oil phase (butter, oil, emulsifier) and the container from the water phase (distilled water and glycerin) into the water bath. Let the butter, oil, and emulsifier completely melt. Allow the oil and water phase contents to heat up to about the same temperature (150 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit).

7: Once the oil phase contents are melted remove both containers with the oil phase content and water phase contents from the heat source.

Cool Down Phase

8: Pour the contents from the water phase into the contents of the oil phase slowly, stirring the oil briskly as you pour in the water.

9: Using an immersion blender, blend the mixture for 2 to 3 mins and then let the mixture cool down for 10 mins or so. Then alternate between using the immersion blender and letting the mixture cool until the mixture starts to thicken up into a cream. Once the mixture is under 100 degrees move to the next step.

10: It’s now time to add in a preservative, I used 1 gram of germall plus (if you use another preservative follow the usage rate for that particular preservative).

How to make body butter to sell

11: With a digital scale, measure 1 gram of vitamin E, add it to the mixture, and stir it in well.

12: Next, measure 2 grams of grapefruit fragrance scent.

13: To add color, measure 1 gram of orange mica to the body butter cream.

14: Lastly, add the body butter cream to your favorite jar and enjoy.

HOW TO USE EMULSIFIED BOBY BUTTER CREAM

Now that you have made your delightful body butter cream it’s time to use it. To use it scoop a quarter size amount from the jar and slather it onto the skin and rub in until it absorbes.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Kokum Butter: Cocoa butter and mango butter are two butter that can be used instead of kokum butter. Keep in mind that cocoa butter normally has a chocolatey smell and can affect the scent of the body butter cream.

Avocado Oil: If you don’t have avocado oil, you can try sweet almond oil or virgin olive oil. Keep in mind that olive oil can have its own unique smell.

Glyceryl Stearate SE: A good substitute for glyceryl stearate SE is polawax. Basically, ploawax will still give you a nice creamy and smooth consistency to your body butter cream.
