WHAT ARE BATH SALTS?

Bath salts are natural minerals that contain potassium, magnesium, and calcium that you put in your bath water, to put it plainly. Basically, salt is a natural mineral that comes from the earth and offers us a lot of benefits with healing benefits being the top reason so many people use them.

So, when talking about making bath salt for soaking the body, there are different kinds of salt that can be used. The sea salts that I use include pink Himalayan sea salt, Epson salt, and sea salt.

Pink Himalayan Salt

As the name suggests pink Himalayan salt has a nice pink color to it and of course, it can be found in an area near the Himalayans in the Punjab region of Pakistan. Also, Himalayan salt contains trace minerals such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium which are some of the same minerals that are found in our bodies. Pretty cool stuff if you ask me.

Be sure to check out the full recipe and ingredient list below

Dead Sea Salt

Dead sea salt actually comes from the Dead Sea which is really a lake and not a sea. This sea salt contains many minerals that a beneficial for health including sodium, iodine, zinc, magnesium, and sulfur to name a few.

Epsom Salt

Epson salt is actually not salt at all. It’s really magnesium sulfate. Basically, It has the appearance of small table salt flakes, maybe a little bigger in size than table salt. But, epsom salt definitely has a different appearance from pink Himalayan salt and dead sea salt. Magnesium sulfate has many health benefits. It’s an amazing bath soak that has been said to have healing effects on the body.

WHY USE BATH SALTS

Bath salt has many benefits and listed below are some of my favorites.

  • Bath salt has been said to help detox the body of impurities
  • They can heal and rejuvenate tired sore achy muscles
  • Possibly make the skin softer
  • Increase relaxation
  • Decrease stress on the body
  • Possibly help to improve sleep quality
  • Soaking in bath salts can possibly help relieve discomfort associated with eczema and psoriasis
  • Hydrate the skin and improve the skin’s outer barrier
  • It has been said to help increase blood circulation
  • Helps to reduce inflammation

HOW TO USE BATH SALT

So exactly how do you use bath salt? This is the easiest part of the process. You basically just scoop a small to medium amount of the bath salts, with a spoon or scooper, from the container and sprinkle it into your bath water. I find it best to add it to my bath water about 1/2 between filling my tub to the desired level. This gives the bath salt enough time to dissolve.

Tools you’ll need

Here are some of my favorite tools to use when making bath salts.

HOW TO MAKE EASY DIY BATH SALT

Remember at the beginning of this post, I said these 3 bath salt ideas were super easy to make? Ok well…here is the proof.

ROSE PINK HIMALAYAN DIY BATH SALT (BATH SALT #1)

Bath salt recipe

1: Measure out 1 cup of coarse pink Himalayan salt, 1 cup of coarse dead sea salt, and 1/2 cup of Epson Salt.

2: Combine the three salts together in a bowl and stir them together.

3: Measure a palm size amount (the palm of your hand) of dried rose petals and crush/ tear them apart with your hands and sprinkle them into the bath salt.

4: Add the bath salts to a container and enjoy.

Adding in Essential Oil is completely optional.

HELPFUL TIPS!

  • Wear gloves and crush the rose petals up between both palms of your hand to get small pieces.
  • Tear some of the rose petals with your fingers to get larger pieces.
  • These two techniques will give your final product a really nice appearance if you use a see-through jar or container to store your bath salts.

BLUE CALENDULA DIY BATH SALT (BATH SALT #2)

1: Gather all of your essential tools needed to make this bath salt. Then, measure 1 cup coarse dead sea salt.

2: Next measure 1/8 of a tablespoon of blue mica and sprinkle it onto the dead sea salt. Mix it up. Add in additional color until you have your desired blue color.

Bath Soak

3: Add in some dried calendula flowers and stir the bath salts.

4: Next measure out 1 cup of fine pink Himalayan salt and set it aside.

Handy tip!

Adding essential oil is completely optional for this recipe. I used a fine pink finely ground pink Himalayan sea salt that is already scented so there is no need to add any additional sent to his bath salt. This is the one used right here.

5: Begin adding the blue sea salt into a 4 oz jar and create alternating layers with the blue pigmented sea salt and the fine pink Himalayan sea salt until the jar is full.

6: Lastly, add a few sprinkles of the dried calendula flowers on top for a nice touch.

More Tips:

Spray the bath salts with 90% rubbing alcohol. This will help the mica to bind better with the crystals if you want a much richer color.

Lilac and Lavender Bath Salts (BATH SALT #3)

1: First using a measuring cup, measure 1 cup of Epson salt.

2: Next, measure 1 cup of fine dead sea salt.

3: Mix the Epson salt and the dead sea salt together and stir.

4: For a nice touch add in 6 drops of lilac liquid pigment. Then, stir the sea salt with a spoon or you can mix it up with your hands if you are wearing gloves. Add in more liquid pigment if you want a more intense color.

Lavender Bath Salt

5: Now, add in 3 to 6 drops of fragrance depending on how light or how strong you like your scents. For this recipe, I used a combination of lilac and lavender scents, but feel free to be creative with your scent choice.

7: To add texture to the sea salt add 1 tbsp of coarse dead sea salt and stir followed by 1 palm full of dried lavender flowers and 1 palm full of orange lily flowers that I crushed up between the palms of my hands.

8: It’s not time to add the bath salt to a storage jar until ready to use.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Dried Flowers: You can use any dried flowers you choose to make your bath salts look beautiful.

Fragrance: You can substitute fragrance for essential oil if you want a different scent and a more therapeutic experience. Additionally, essential oils have more therapeutic benefits compared to using regular scented fragrances whose purpose is just to add scent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I have to add scents to the DIY bath salt? You do not have to add scents to these bath salts you can use them right out of the bag that they came in and they will be just as therapeutic.

Is it necessary to use dried flowers in these bath salts? If you plan to use flowers I would recommend using dried flowers as opposed to living flowers.

How long do bath salts last? It’s advisable to check the expiration date on the bath salt package you use as well as any other ingredients you are using to make the bath salts. I normally keep bath salts up to 6 months.
